Feel free to ignore this

Jack and I went to see the new Star Trek on Sunday. It was good, very go go go. All in all, I think my favourite character is Bones because he does his job and gets on with what he's supposed to do and everything but he literally complains about it the entire time and I relate to that on a spiritual level.

I had a point with this blog post. It was going to go somewhere, I'm sure of it.

Me saying that I'd been to the cinema can't have been the only thing I wanted to say.

Surely not.

Well, this is embarrassing.

Okay, well, in other news, my parents went away for a few days and the only present they brought back for me was the tea-bags from their hotel room. Fancy tea-bags, but still. I was shocked and appalled, too.

I genuinely can't remember what my purpose was with this so I'll leave it there for now. I'm sure it'll come to me at some point.

I've just ordered my cap and gown for graduation, so that's all very exciting. I couldn't find a tape measure to measure my head, but I did find one of those things you use to measure the length of a room or a doorway or something. They don't work as well because they don't really bend, but I'm reasonably confident in my guesstimation. Besides, a reliable friend informed me that there are spare hats on the day, so I'm not too worried.

The company I had to order from sent me an email with all the information I needed, and at the top of the email it said this:

Right, okay. Please print, I'll be sure to do that. Underneath this was my reference number, a record of my payment and other confirmation details. Then, at the bottom was this:

Well, now I'm confused. I checked just in case this footer was a hotmail related thing, but it is actually from the graduation gown company place. Now I feel like I'm in a lose-lose situation. I have to print the email, but I'm going to get judged for it. I don't need judgemental emails in my life.

In other news, I miss Lost. I've been watching some of the special features on the DVDs to try and fill the void, but it's not quite the same. Sigh.

Oh, and just before I go, I've finally watched Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End which is the third one (bit behind the times, I know), and I literally had no idea what was going on for most of it, and I can't believe they gave Will and Elizabeth such a sad ending. I won't say what happens in case I get accused of ruining it for someone, but seriously, you're better off giving it a miss, it's awful. It's so awful that not even Jack Sparrow could save it, and I love Jack Sparrow.

That being said I still want to see the new one because Will and Elizabeth aren't in it and there's MERMAIDS involved I think.

5 Complaints of the Day

1. I overslept and forgot it was bin day so when I woke up and remembered, I had to rush downstairs with the heavy recycling bag. I made it in the nick of time, the bin-men went past just as I went back inside, but still, it was an annoyingly stressful start to my morning (not that taking out bin-bags is stressful, but my brain wasn't functioning yet.)

2. I went to the library to get some books out for revision purposes, and the one I needed the most wasn't there, even though I checked the system and it said it was in the library. I hate it when things aren't where they're supposed to be.

3. This advert for Diet Coke:

There are so many things about this advert that annoy me. Firstly, the idea that you'd buy a handbag just to put a can in it is absurd. Just drink it. Secondly, why does she need a bag so small that only a can of coke can fit inside it? Is that really all she needs on her? No phone, no keys, no money? It's alright, she's got a Diet Coke, she is prepared for any possible situation. Thirdly, why are her friends carrying around a chainsaw and a blowtorch? And finally, the fact that after using said chainsaw to desecrate the 'too big' bag in order to make it small enough for her can, she has the audacity to say to the naturally horrified salesman - "You should lighten up!" Then she walks out with her mates without even paying. What a bitch.

I really hate that advert.

4. The 'j' button on my laptop is playing up so I have to press it extra hard.

5. I've twisted funny or something and now it feels like I've dislocated my hip. Fantastic, I'm a 90 year old lady.

Alexander: A Review

The night that I stayed up until 4am doing last minute dissertation related things, Alexander the movie about Alexander the Great was on acting as my background noise. I had several problems with this movie that I am going to share with you. Without further ado, here is my review of Alexander.

*Disclaimer: As I was paying very little attention, this review will be wholly inaccurate because I actually have no idea what the plot was - from what I can gather, there's some fighting and a lot of Colin Farrell being really weird.*

  • First of all, Angelina Jolie playing Colin Farrell's mother is the most ridiculous casting ever, plus it didn't look like much effort had been made to make her look older.
  • Second, wasn't Alexander the Great Greek, and not Irish? I know that Colin Farrell is Irish, but maybe a neutral accent could have been used or something. Plus Angelina was trying to do a Greek accent (I think that's what it was at least), so it all just sounded very odd. Bit of consistency would have been nice.
  • I think there might have been incesty (is that a word) undertones between Alexander and his mum. Which is always weird.
  • Anthony Hopkins narrating the film just made me think of The Grinch.
  • Why does no one in Greece look Greek?
  • Finally, it's like 3 hours long or something. If you want to watch a 3 hour film, I'd suggest Titanic, or one of The Lord of the Rings films.

I was also going to complain about the fact that Alexander was blond, but Wikipedia tells me that he was, in fact, blond and of a pale complexion. See, I do my research.

Here concludes my Alexander review. Next week: Troy.

(I'm only joking. I probably won't review Troy. Also, I'm aware that this by no means constitutes a 'review' so if you're genuinely interested in a review of Alexander, this probably won't help you and I suggest you look elsewhere.)

Song of the Day: Rumour Has It by Adele
She made your heart melt/But you're cold to the core/Now rumour has it she ain't got your love anymore

What an epic waste of time

I can't believe it's March already. It's put me in a slight panic because I know that I'm (near enough) in my final month of classes of university ever. Unless of course I plan on doing a Masters or something next year, but in my frame of mind at the moment, that seems incredibly unlikely. I can't wait to leave education. Not that the job market looks particularly inviting at the moment, but I've just been in the education system for so, so long, and I'm excited for new things, whatever they might be. But anyway, March. That means I only have just over two months before my dissertation is due in. I got my dissertation proposal which I handed in before Christmas back today, and I got 65 (a 2:1), which I'm pleased with because a) it means that generally speaking, I'm on the right track, and b) it's worth 10% of my overall mark. Go me.

I wasn't originally going to do a blog today, but Daf's gone out and I'm bored. It's Tuesday which means there's a lot of CSI on, but I'm trying to do something more productive with my time (stopping short of doing actual work, of course). I saw one those music quizzy things floating around online, where you put your iTunes on random and answer questions with the songs that come up, and so I'm going to do it, and post it on here. Because I am cool, and I like music and quizzes.

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Put your iPod/iTunes or other music player on shuffle.
2. For each question, press the NEXT button to get your answer.
3. YOU MUST WRITE THAT SONG NAME DOWN NO MATTER HOW SILLY IT SOUNDS!

Ah internet distractions

Two posts in one night! Shocker!

There's really no point to this other than to tell you I really want to buy this t-shirt from play.com for Dafydd:

It's not true really, he is capable of simple tasks, but it sums up how I feel sometimes. I don't think he'd appreciate it as a gift though.

OK, I'm going now, I'm busy.

Coincidence?

Just a quick one today.

Strange things happened yesterday, all TV related. Me and Daf were talking about Shaun of the Dead yesterday and, lo and behold, it was on the telly last night. Also, the night before we had watched Air Force One because we have it on DVD, and that was also on the telly last night. And finally, North by Northwest was on yesterday as well, and that was on the IMDb top 250 list that I was talking about. WEIRD, right? It's funny how often things like that happen.

I was bored last night and went back over all my blog posts and added my favourite lyrics from my Song of the Day bit. Lame, I know, but I felt like it. And last of all, we saw a bit of a Lee Mack stand-up show on Dave the other day and he was talking about how everyone's faces fit into two categories: horse and plate. I have a plate face; Daf has a horse face. What kind of face do YOU have?

Today I'm loving: Sky Three's free weekend pass - I got to watch Spongebob!

Today I'm hatin': homework, sad times.

Arghhhh

Sigh.

Anyone who has been keeping up to date with this blog, new though it is, will notice that the layout keeps changing. I'm trying to get it just how I want it but Blogger seems to be really good at over-complicating matters. I want to move the title (Useless Ramblings) to the centre and I want to change the font, but apparently that's impossible. I'm sure I'll get it just right eventually but right now it's all new and it's frustrating the hell out of me.

At the moment I'm reveling* in the fact that I've succeeded in getting Dafydd to watch Lost with me. I started watching Lost when it first came out on Channel 4, but missed a couple of episodes and, ironically, got completely lost when I next managed to watch it. I'd been wanting to start watching it again for a while because I never really got past the first season before but I did enjoy it when I actually knew what was going on. So Daf bought me the first two seasons on DVD for Christmas. I thought I was going to have to watch them on my own, as Daf has said on several occasions: "Lost, it's just the worst show ever", despite never having actually seen it. Typical. Anyway, he saw bits and pieces when I was watching it and eventually his curiosity peaked and he started properly watching it with me, and even suggested putting it on a couple of times. Today we finished the first season, and I'm so glad we already have the second because to be honest I'd have been disappointed if I had to wait for new episodes after the somewhat lacklustre season one finale.

In other news, I know it seems like I'm blogging a lot (I do have a life, honest), but I don't have any lectures at the minute because it's exam time. I've just got revision to do for my last semester one exam, which is on Friday. But other than that I've got a bags of free time, and I'm really enjoying this at the moment. It gives me a chance to vent when Daf doesn't want to listen to me anymore.

Also, I have a £25 gift card for Amazon that I got for Christmas but no idea what to spend it on. Any ideas? I have a feeling I may end up getting some sort of Spongebob Squarepants boxset...

Hope everyone's had good weekends, or fun at work for those of you reading in Saudi (I know mum's told you about this!)

Emma

*I wanted to spell this with two l's, but apparently that's not right. But reveling looks wrong. Oh well, you know what I'm trying to say.
